DIRECTIONS IN VASTU PLANS

In Vastu Shastra, the 8 directions are considered sacred and are believed to be governed by specific deities and cosmic energies. The proper alignment and balance of these directional energies are thought to promote health, wealth, and harmony for a home's occupants. In a modern context, Vastu is adapted to contemporary layouts, using the principles of natural light, ventilation, and space utilization to create a positive and balanced living environment.

Significance of the 8 directions

  • Ancient wisdom in a modern context: Vastu's principles align with many modern design concepts. Proper orientation ensures maximum natural light, promoting mental and physical well-being. Good ventilation and clutter-free spaces, which are Vastu principles, contribute to a fresh and peaceful atmosphere.
  • Balancing the five elements: Vastu organizes a space according to the five elements of nature—earth, water, fire, air, and space. By allocating specific zones for different activities, it seeks to balance these elements to create a harmonious environment.
  • Promoting well-being and prosperity: The directional guidelines, when followed, are believed to remove energy blockages and attract positive cosmic forces. This, in turn, can enhance a family's health, finances, relationships, and overall happiness.
  • Adaptable guidelines: Vastu principles are not rigid. In modern, pre-built urban homes where radical changes are impossible, minor adjustments like mirror placement, color choices, and furniture arrangement can be used as effective remedies.

The 8 directions and their importance

North (Uttara)

  • Governing deity: Lord Kubera, the god of wealth and prosperity.
  • Elemental energy: Water.
  • Significance: It is the most auspicious direction for attracting financial abundance, career growth, and new opportunities. The north is also associated with spiritual growth.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: The main entrance, living room, office, and home valuables should be placed here. A water feature, such as a fountain, can be placed in this zone to enhance prosperity.
    • Avoid: Heavy furniture, cluttered spaces, or toilets, as these can block the flow of positive energy.

Northeast (Ishanya)

  • Governing deity: Lord Shiva, symbolizing tranquility, knowledge, and spirituality.
  • Elemental energy: Water and Space.
  • Significance: The most sacred and energized zone, representing mental clarity, spiritual growth, and peace. Keeping this area clean and open is paramount for stress-free living.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: This is the ideal location for a puja room, meditation space, or study. Placing a water element like a small fountain or an aquarium here is considered beneficial.
    • Avoid: Toilets, kitchens, staircases, and heavy storage, as these can create a major Vastu imbalance, leading to health or financial issues.

East (Purva)

  • Governing deity: Lord Indra, the king of gods, and the Sun God Surya.
  • Elemental energy: Air and Fire.
  • Significance: The direction of the rising sun, symbolizing new beginnings, health, and vitality. It is associated with spiritual growth, enlightenment, and social harmony.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: Main entrances, windows, and balconies should face east to welcome the morning sun. Living rooms and family spaces are also well-suited for this direction.
    • Avoid: Placing a staircase, toilet, or heavy walls in this zone can obstruct the flow of positive energy.

Southeast (Agneya)

  • Governing deity: Lord Agni, the god of fire.
  • Elemental energy: Fire.
  • Significance: Governs energy, confidence, and passion. If balanced correctly, it can bring financial stability and strong relationships. If imbalanced, it can cause conflict and stress.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: This is the ideal location for the kitchen, electrical panels, and fire-related equipment. The kitchen stove should be placed here, with the cook facing east.
    • Avoid: Water-related structures like bathrooms or water tanks should not be placed here.

South (Dakshina)

  • Governing deity: Lord Yama, the god of death.
  • Elemental energy: Fire and Earth.
  • Significance: Represents strength, stability, and protection from negative energies. While mistakenly considered inauspicious, a well-managed southern zone offers strength and groundedness.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: Bedrooms (head facing south for restful sleep), storage areas, and heavy furniture are ideal here. The southern wall should be thicker and higher than the northern wall.
    • Avoid: Water bodies and main entrances, as these can lead to instability or financial problems.

Southwest (Nairutya)

  • Governing deity: The demon Niruthi and the planet Rahu.
  • Elemental energy: Earth.
  • Significance: Associated with stability, strength, and relationships. It is the zone for the head of the family and offers a sense of control and grounding.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: The master bedroom, especially for the head of the family, is best placed here to ensure stability in relationships. Heavy objects and furniture should also be kept in this direction.
    • Avoid: Main entrances, open spaces, or extensions, as these are considered inauspicious and can lead to negativity and losses.

West (Paschima)

  • Governing deity: Lord Varun, the god of water.
  • Elemental energy: Water.
  • Significance: Associated with prosperity, happiness, and fulfillment. If utilized correctly, it can yield incredible results and overall prosperity.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: Over-head water tanks, dining areas, and children's rooms can be placed in this direction. Heavy items can be kept against the western walls to make them heavier than the east.
    • Avoid: Underground water tanks and extensions, as these can bring health issues and delays.

Northwest (Vayavya)

  • Governing deity: Lord Vayu, the god of air.
  • Elemental energy: Air.
  • Significance: Governs movement, change, communication, and social interactions. A balanced northwest zone fosters positive relationships, but an imbalanced one can cause restlessness.
  • Modern application:
    • Recommended: Guest rooms, living rooms, and finished goods that are ready to be sold are ideal here. Bathrooms and toilets can also be located in this zone.
    • Avoid: Heavy storage and fire elements, as they can disrupt the flow of energy.
