THE ATHARVA VEDA

The Atharva Veda (अथर्ववेद) is the fourth Veda in the Vedic tradition and is quite different in character from the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas. It is sometimes called the “Veda of spells, healing, and everyday life” because it contains hymns dealing with practical life: health, long life, charms, exorcisms, domestic rites, and also philosophical and speculative hymns.

Here is a structured breakup of the Atharva Veda and its contents, sequentially:

1. General Structure

  • Total Hymns (Suktas): 730
  • Total Verses (Mantras): about 5,987
  • Books (Kāṇḍas): 20 (though Kandas 19–20 are considered later additions)

The Atharva Veda is considered the seedbed for Vaastu Shastra and Sthapatya Veda/Shilpa traditions. Let me place them for you in context:

📖 Placement of Vaastu Shastra & Sthapatya Shilpa in Vedic Corpus

  1. Atharva Veda – Primary Source
    • Vaastu Vidyā (the science of dwellings, sites, and orientations) and Sthāpatya Veda (architecture and construction science) are traced mainly to Atharva Veda.
    • In fact, tradition calls Sthāpatya Veda the “Upa-Veda” of Atharva Veda.
    • Atharva Veda Kāṇḍas 3, 5, 9, 10, 12, and 19 contain hymns and mantras that directly or indirectly deal with:
      • Laying out of sacred and domestic spaces.
      • Orientation of houses and altars.
      • Invocations to protect dwellings from evil and ensure prosperity.
      • Bhūmi Sūkta (12th Kāṇḍa) = foundation for site selection, earth as sacred mother.
  2. Upa-Vedas (Auxiliary Sciences)
    • The Vedas are said to have four Upa-Vedas:
      • Āyurveda (medicine) – from Atharva Veda.
      • Dhanurveda (archery, warfare) – from Yajur Veda.
      • Gāndharvaveda (music, dance, aesthetics) – from Sama Veda.
      • Sthāpatyaveda (architecture, town planning, Vaastu) – from Atharva Veda.

👉 So, Vaastu Shastra is traditionally part of Sthāpatyaveda, which in turn is an auxiliary science (Upa-Veda) of Atharva Veda.

  1. Sthapatya Shilpa (Applied Manuals)
    • Later texts like Mānasāra, Mayamata, Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra, Vishvakarma Prakāśa, Aparājitapṛcchā systematized the science of building, sculpture, temples, and town planning.
    • These were practical elaborations of principles rooted in Atharvavedic hymns about space, order, proportion, and sanctity of dwelling.

📌 In Sequential Understanding

  • Atharva Veda Kāṇḍa 12 (Bhūmi Sūkta) → sacredness of earth and site selection.
  • Atharva Veda Kāṇḍa 3, 5, 9, 10 → protection of dwellings, prosperity of household.
  • Later Upa-Veda (Sthāpatyaveda) → codifies these into rules for Vaastu (dwelling), Chitra (painting), Murti (iconography), Prāsāda (temples), Nāgara (city planning).
  • Shilpa Shastras → practical manuals for builders, sculptors, and artisans, ensuring cosmological principles are translated into material structures.

In short:

  • Atharva Veda → Sthāpatya Veda (Upa-Veda) → Vaastu Shastra + Shilpa Shastra.
  • Atharva Veda provides the spiritual-philosophical foundation, while the Shilpa & Vaastu texts provide the practical-technical application.
